Should Wellington City merge with other councils?

The Wellington City Council is asking for initial community views from Wellington City residents and ratepayers on amalgamation via a survey on their website and public forums later this month.

Wellington City residents and ratepayers can fill out the survey (closes 19 July 2026) and/or register to speak at a public forum on 29 or 30 July by visiting wcc.nz/amalgamation.

The survey asks people for their views on submitting an amalgamation proposal and which councils Wellington City should consider merging with, alongside their priorities, concerns, and the outcomes they’d hope to see from any future changes.

Feedback will be used by the Council to help inform their decision-making as they consider the proposal.
