The first training session with Wellington Free Ambulance (WFA) was held on 7 July between 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Rachel (from WFA) spoke and showed through practical demonstrations how to deliver CPR and use an AED machine. The 12 participants were then hands-on, practising what they had been taught. Rachel cannot be praised highly enough. She was sensitive to the group of trainees, allowed a lovely flow of humour and instruction and encouraged questions as she went along. A second training course has been arranged for 22 September but is already booked up. The Thorndon Residents’ Association has again sponsored the venue cost.
Beyond the individual benefit, participation in such training helps build strength and resilience within the Thorndon/Pipitea community. A community with more trained members is better prepared to respond to emergencies, ensuring that help is available before professional services arrive. This shared capability fosters a safer environment for everyone and promotes a sense of collective responsibility and care.
The willingness to learn these skills means attendees could one day save the life of a neighbour, friend, or family member. Together, this growing network of trained residents plays a valuable role in creating a community that is confident, prepared, and ready to act when it matters most.
Some comments received:
- What a great evening, I came home buzzing, downloaded the app and realised there is no AED/CPR machine in the Village and the one at 368 Tinakori Road has gone as the building has been sold and the dentists moved.
- Thank you for organising last night’s excellent training. XXXX and I have attended a number of first aid courses over the years, and the structure and content for this one was very refreshing. We left with a new understanding of sudden cardiac arrest and what CPR and the AED do for someone during this type of event, and the importance of critical actions. Please pass on our thanks to Rachel for her excellent delivery and congratulations to WFA for the development of the course.
- It was excellent training session. Everyone walked away with new insights.
- If you need someone to help organise the potential third session, then I would be happy to help out…
- I always wondered what was in an AED box, how to access it and how to use it in an emergency. Rachel told us the WFA AED’s are world class. It speaks you through the actions needed, when to stop and then what to do. It even sets up a beat for you to follow when giving CPR and when to shock or not. Excellent. I feel more confident to act if needed.
